Specialist Carpentry Contractor for the Canterbury Cathedral Journey and Westminster Hall

Dolmen Conservation’s  ethos is a high quality, intelligent approach to the repair and conservation of historic buildings and their many components. We combine traditional carpentry skills with modern technologies and an in-depth understanding of historic structures. The Dolmen Conservation team  has unique technical knowledge and takes a meticulous approach, understanding each repair detail, in the conservation of historic buildings. 

Dolmen Conservation also operates its own sawmill and joinery workshop that specialise in curved timbers, quarter sawing and air-dried beams, from their own managed woodland in Kent.  We hold a large stock of premium, locally sourced, air-dried oak ready for use at any specified moisture contents and grade. Dolmen has worked on numerous historic buildings, scheduled ancient monuments and grade 1 listed building’s. Our  client list includes

  • The Society for the Protection of Ancient buildings (The SPAB),

  • English Heritage

  • Church's Conservation Trust 

  • The Dean and Chapter of Canterbury Cathedral.   


Tom Massey  is Dolmen Conservations Director of Carpentry, he studied BA Hons Fine Art at Brighton and has over 20 years of experience as a historic conservation carpenter.  In 2014 Tom Massey completed the SPAB William Morris Craft Fellowship and is on the case work team for the SPAB.   


Joel Hopkins  (Senior Carpenter – Dolmen Conservation) leads our on-site carpentry team at Canterbury Cathedral.  Joel has worked with Dolmen Conservation for over 15 years and specialises in historic building timber repairs.  He holds a fine art degree and undertakes a large proportion of the design work and listed building applications for the company. 


The project management and administration team are overseen by Jack Massey.

Jack has a 1st  Class Hons. degree in Business Management and a PGCE in Education.  He has worked in senior management positions for the last 10 years and re-joined Dolmen in 2014 as Director of Projects.        

Dolmen Conservation has a skilled team of both direct carpentry workforce and trusted trade subcontractors that successfully work under our umbrella. This allows the capacity to manage and operate on multi-sites as Principal Contractor or as a specialist subcontractor.
